To date, only two types of materials have been seriously studied for use in optical waveguides. These are plastics and glasses. Plastic fibers offer advantages such as low cost and ease of production, but their high transmission losses prevent them from being used in places other than short-distance (i.e., a few hundred meters) optical lines.
